Norton swears-in Commissioners

Secretary Norton to swear-in Flight 93 Federal Advisory Commissioners. WASHINGTON - Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton will be in Shanksville on September 11, to give brief remarks and swear- in commissioners for the Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission. The swearing in ceremony will be held at 4:00 PM at the Flight 93 Temporary Memorial along Skyline Road in Stonycreek Township. The new 15-member Federal Advisory Commission comprises 14 nominations received from the Flight 93 Memorial Task Force, approved by Secretary Norton and the designee to represent the Director of the National Park Service. The commissioners are responsible for developing and submitting a report to the Secretary and Congress containing recommendations for the planning, design, construction and long-term management of a permanent memorial dedicated to the passengers and crew members who died onboard Flight 93, September 11, 2001. "The crash site of Flight 93 is a story of selfless courage and patriotism that inspires the true meaning of love of country and the freedom we enjoy," Norton said. "This very important commission will work to help us interpret the story of the heroic deeds of the passengers and crew members of this poignant and tragic event in our nation's history." Norton, a lifelong conservationist, public servant and advocate for bringing common sense solutions to environmental policy, was sworn in as the 48th Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior in January 2001. She is the first woman to head the 153-year-old department. Also among those attending the event will be: Marie Rust, National Park Service, Northeast Regional Director; Joanne Hanley, Superintendent, Flight 93 National Memorial; Judge Kim R. Gibson, Co-Chairman, Flight 93 Memorial Task Force; James Marker, Chairman, Somerset County Commissioners, and the nominees to the commission who include family members of the victims. ###
