Flight 93 Memorial Task Force Announced

January 29, 2003 - The Somerset County Board of Commissioners announced the appointment of the Flight 93 Task Force to begin the formal process of developing a national memorial to honor and remember the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93. The Task Force, which includes Flight 93 family members, landowners, community residents, emergency responders and representatives from other key stakeholder groups, will work closely with the Flight 93 Federal Advisory Commission and the official family organization, the Families of Flight 93, Inc., to create the memorial at the site of the September 11, 2001 crash in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. "Those who have agreed to serve as members of the Task Force have assumed a responsibility to the families, this community and the nation to ensure that the heroic actions of the 40 brave individuals who perished on that ill-fated flight are never forgotten," said Chairman James Marker. "The Board of Commissioners sincerely thanks them for their call to public service." Among the first duties of the Flight 93 Memorial Task Force will be to develop a mission statement and guiding principles for the development of the memorial. The Task Force will also be responsible for establishing the criteria and nominating process for the members of the Flight 93 Federal Advisory Commission and is expected to submit recommendations for nominees to the Secretary of the Interior by early summer, 2003. The Task Force will also work closely with the National Park Service as it works to develop a General Management Plan for the site, assisting with the public involvement process and various aspects of planning. "The National Park Service looks forward to working in partnership with the Flight 93 Task Force. I'm sure that together we will be able to enlist the support of the families, the community, the Commonwealth, and the Nation in planning and developing a national memorial to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93," said Joanne Hanley, Superintendent of the Flight 93 National Memorial. "As a unit of the National Park Service, it will be forever protected for generations of Americans to come."
