Task Force Statement on Orie Funds

Task Force Statement on Senator Jane Orie Funds. Somerset, PA - On Saturday, August 16, 2003, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Flight 93 Memorial Task Force met to further their efforts to create and construct a memorial honoring the courageous passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County on September 11, 2001. An agenda item addressing funding for this memorial led to a discussion regarding funds which had been raised by Senator Jane Orie's office through the "Hearts of Steel" bracelet project she and her staff developed and successfully completed. Through the kind and generous contributions by many, $1 million was raised on behalf of the memorial. Since those funds had not yet been transferred to the Families of Flight 93, Inc. Trust Account, there was a question raised as when this would occur. Mr. Larry Catuzzi, Co-Chair of the Task Force along with Judge Kim Gibson, indicated the effort to transfer those funds is continuing and would hopefully be completed soon. "The families in the Task Force are extremely appreciative of all the hard work Senator Orie and her staff provided in raising these funds to help make the Memorial a reality," said Mr. Catuzzi. "I apologize for any misconception my comments made at the Task Force meeting on Saturday may have created. At no time did I, or those family members who have been working with Senator Orie and her staff, ever believe those funds would not be transferred to the families' Trust Account. A substantial number of approvals to complete the transfer are necessary. The Senator is in the process of setting up a trust account to ensure that all of these funds are earmarked specifically for the construction of the Memorial," he said. Mr. Catuzzi was available to answer questions related to this matter during a press conference held by Senator Orie today, Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Gold Room of the City-County Building of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, 11:00 am.
