Anniversary Memorial Plans Announced

Flight 93 1-Year Anniversary Memorial Service Plans Announced. In a press conference held Monday, July 15, 2002, details were announced surrounding the 1st Anniversary Memorial Service 'A Time for Honor and Hope' to be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2002. "The purpose in planning and presenting the 1st anniversary memorial service is to deliver a dignified, solemn, and tasteful tribute that both honors the sacrifice of the brave heroes of Flight 93, and consoles those they left behind. We wish to convey the heartfelt feelings of Somerset County and our nation as we remember the 1-year anniversary of the events of September 11, particularly as they relate to Flight 93. 'A Time for Honor and Hope' will exemplify the honor we as a grateful nation bestow upon the heroes of Flight 93 for their unforgettable sacrifice, and hope for the future and faith in tomorrow." states Susan Hankinson, Somerset County Flight 93 Coordinator. Hankinson announces that many details surrounding the memorial service are still in the planning stage or are awaiting final confirmation, therefore further details will be announced as they become available. The approximate start time of the service is slated between 9:30-9:45 AM on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 and will be held in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, PA at the surrounding Skyline Drive property area. No on-site parking will be permitted. Concentric circle parking will be implemented with shuttle bus service to and from the public memorial service. Handicapped accessible parking and transportation will be available with details announced at a future date. Confirmed program participants include: The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Istvan Jaray; 2nd Marine Corps Aircraft Wing Band and Honor Guard located in Cherry Point, NC; The 'Bell of Remembrance', from The Remembrance Project, Wilmington, Delaware; and 'Old Glory' American Flag, the ceremonial American flag for the Flight 93 anniversary memorial service. As stated previously, and by formal request of the Flight 93 families, the memorial service program will be a simple, solemn ceremony, with only very limited keynote participants. It is important to remember that for many Flight 93 families, September 11, 2002 will be their first opportunity to visit this most sacred and hallowed ground, the final resting place of their loved ones. It is imperative that everyone-no matter what your role-remember this is a memorial service. Consequently, it will be managed in the same fashion. Hankinson notes, "We cannot more strongly stress that we are firmly committed to the Flight 93 families and their specific requests for the memorial service. We will strictly adhere to their requests accordingly." SPECIAL NOTE: Challenge Request!! The magnitude and logistics of presenting the 1st anniversary memorial service program in a rural setting will be tremendous and challenging as expected attendance will be in the thousands. Currently, the Somerset County school districts are unable to accommodate our need for busing. Therefore, an appeal for 100 buses (preferably school buses) is being requested at this time. Interested parties are asked to contact the Flight 93 Coordinator's office at 8 or email at . They may also contact committee member, Sienna Davis of Davis Bus Lines/STA, bus coordinator for the service at 1 or email at . Addtional details surrounding the plans for the public memorial service will be posted on the website and announced through various news media when they become available.
